Prost leads the championship after his Monaco victory, which awarded half points — the race was stopped before 75% of the scheduled distance was completed.

Previous race

Prost won a rain-shortened Monaco. The race was stopped at lap 31 of the scheduled 80 after conditions deteriorated severely. Senna had been closing rapidly on Prost from second place in the Toleman when the red flag came out — the standings revert to the previous lap, where Prost had still been leading. It was Senna’s first Formula One podium. Mansell led briefly before spinning off on a painted white line on the climb to Casino Square. Both Renaults of Tambay and Warwick were involved in a first-corner accident; Tambay sustained a leg injury and will miss this race.

Entrants

Patrick Tambay is absent from the Renault line-up, recovering from the leg injury sustained at Monaco. Mario Andretti had been considered as a possible replacement, but he is spending the weekend as a spectator, watching his sons race in the support events.
