Prost won at Imola in a McLaren 1–2 that was less comfortable than it appeared — a carbon brake overheating problem mid-race caused him to spin through the infield, necessitating a tyre stop. Arnoux was second, de Angelis third despite running out of fuel on the last lap.

Track changes

This is the final Formula One race to be held at the 3.801 km Dijon-Prenois circuit. FISA has deemed the venue too short — during the 1984 season, cars are lapping in the 1m 2s range, and the governing body has stipulated that any lap under a minute does not count as a completed lap.
