Hawthorn leads with 40 points. Moss is second on 32, with Brooks third on 24.

Previous race

At Monza, Brooks won for Vanwall. Hawthorn finished second and Hill third for Ferrari in a race of sustained slipstreaming. Carroll Shelby finished fourth in the Cooper he shared with Masten Gregory, though no points were awarded for the shared drive.

Championship permutations

Moss needs to win the race and set fastest lap, with Hawthorn finishing third or lower. Alternatively, Moss wins without setting fastest lap, provided Hawthorn also fails to set it and finishes third or lower.

Between-race developments

Wolfgang von Trips sustained a leg injury at Monza and does not race in the season finale. There is a six-week gap since the Italian Grand Prix.

Circuit

Morocco hosts a World Championship Grand Prix for the first time, and the only time. The race is held at the Ain-Diab Circuit in Casablanca.

Entrants

Ferrari and Vanwall each enter three cars. BRM enters four. Lotus and Cooper enter two each. A further five non-works F1 entries bring the total F1 specification cars to 19, with six Formula Two Coopers completing a 25-car field.

Practice

On Friday, Jean Behra (BRM) sets the fastest time at 2:25.2. Brooks (Vanwall) and Hawthorn (Ferrari) are second and third, four and five tenths behind respectively. Moss cannot better 2:26, hampered by traffic during his fast runs.

On Saturday, Hawthorn goes fastest with a 2:23.1, one tenth ahead of Moss, who is content to sit in the middle of the front row on the three-then-two grid. Lewis-Evans is on the outside of the front row, half a second behind. Phil Hill and Behra make up the second row.
