At Porto, Moss won for Vanwall on the street circuit while Hawthorn finished second after a dramatic late episode in which he spun and stalled his car, then push-started it without assistance to reclaim the position. Lewis-Evans was third.

Between-race developments

After the race, Hawthorn faced a post-race stewards’ inquiry over the push-start incident. Moss, despite having a personal interest in the outcome, appeared before the judges to argue that Hawthorn had done nothing wrong. The decision was ultimately reversed and Hawthorn’s second place reinstated.

Entrants

American Carroll Shelby and Masten Gregory are entered to share a car for the race. Under the current regulations, no championship points are awarded for a shared drive.

Practice

Moss and Brooks place their Vanwalls at the top of the grid. Hawthorn starts from third in the Ferrari.
