At Reims, Hawthorn won ahead of championship rival Moss and Ferrari teammate Wolfgang von Trips. Fangio finished fourth in what was his final Formula One race; on the last lap, Hawthorn eased off so that Fangio could unlap himself and complete the full race distance.

Between-race developments

Ferrari driver Luigi Musso was fatally injured at the Courbe du Calvaire during the French Grand Prix when he ran wide and his car struck a ditch and somersaulted. He was airlifted to hospital with critical head injuries and died later that day.

Juan Manuel Fangio has retired from Formula One following the French race.

Circuit

The British Grand Prix moves to Silverstone from Aintree, in keeping with the event-sharing arrangement between the two circuits.

Entrants

Bernie Ecclestone enters a pair of Connaught B-Types for Ivor Bueb and Jack Fairman, with Ecclestone also named as a driver of the Fairman car in the event he needs to take over the entry.

Three different British teams occupy the front row: Moss (Vanwall), Schell (BRM), and Salvadori (Cooper).
