Massa won in Turkey from pole, leading Räikkönen home in a Ferrari one-two. Hamilton suffered a tyre failure while running third, dropping to fifth; his championship lead over Alonso was cut from seven points to five.

Between-race developments

McLaren dominated the traditional pre-Monza test session, with Alonso fastest on two of the four days and Hamilton and Pedro de la Rosa leading the other two. Despite Ferrari’s expectations of strength at their home race — backed by a Turkish one-two and Schumacher’s Monza victory last year — McLaren arrive as the quicker team in testing.
