Championship standings

Alonso leads the championship with 84 points, ahead of Schumacher on 59 and Räikkönen on 39. Fisichella is fourth on 37, Massa fifth on 28. In the Constructors’ Championship, Renault lead on 121 points; Ferrari are second on 87 and McLaren third on 65.

Previous race

Alonso won in Canada — his sixth win of the season — extending his lead over Schumacher. Räikkönen attacked at the front early on but lost time with pit stop problems, including spinning on his in-lap at the second round of stops. Schumacher spent much of the race stuck behind Trulli before eventually getting past. Villeneuve crashed into the wall due to brake failure in the closing stages; it was his last race at the circuit named after his father. Michelin scored their 100th Formula One victory as a tyre supplier.

Milestones

This is the 40th United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis, and Schumacher’s fourth consecutive win here. The race weekend falls on the anniversary of the 2005 tyre controversy, when 14 cars withdrew before the start due to safety concerns about Michelin’s tyre supply.
