Alonso has extended his lead following his win at Silverstone. Schumacher remains his closest challenger but has not matched the Renault’s pace across a full race since the European Grand Prix.

Alonso won the British Grand Prix from pole with fastest lap — becoming the first Spanish driver and the youngest ever (24 years and 317 days) to achieve a hat-trick of pole position, victory and fastest lap at the same race. He led every lap except one. Schumacher leapfrogged Räikkönen at the second round of pit stops to finish second. Webber and Ralf Schumacher both retired on the opening lap after Scott Speed pushed Schumacher’s Toyota into Webber’s Williams. Montoya and Villeneuve scored the final World Championship points of their careers.

Milestones

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is named after Jacques Villeneuve’s father, the late Gilles Villeneuve, who died at Zolder in 1982. This is Jacques Villeneuve’s last race at the circuit bearing his father’s name.
