At the Hungaroring, Boutsen won from Senna by 0.288 seconds, holding him off in the final laps despite fading brakes. Prost retired with a gearbox failure. On lap 64, Senna attempted to pass Nannini at the chicane and the two collided, putting Nannini out; on lap 72, Berger attempted the same move on Mansell at the same corner, putting both cars out.

Championship standings

Senna leads Prost by ten points, 54 to 44. Berger is third with 29, Boutsen fourth with 27.

Between-race developments

The Onyx team has withdrawn from Formula One for financial reasons ahead of this race. Their departure means Ligier, who had only just dropped into pre-qualifying, are now relieved of the requirement and return to the main pool.

Nigel Mansell is being strongly linked with a move to Williams for 1991, reportedly having demanded undisputed number-one status and assurances about the Renault engine — conditions Frank Williams has said are impossible to guarantee.
