At Paul Ricard, Prost won his third race in succession — Ferrari’s 100th victory in Formula One — closing the gap to Senna to just three points. The afternoon’s real story came from Leyton House: Capelli and Gugelmin ran first and second for nearly two-thirds of the race before Prost caught Capelli in the closing laps and Gugelmin’s engine blew. It was the team’s first podium.

Milestones

Riccardo Patrese starts his 200th Grand Prix, becoming the first driver in history to reach the milestone.

Circuit

Silverstone is the fastest circuit on the calendar, with Mansell qualifying at an average speed of 158 mph. This is the last race on the original high-speed layout — construction crews begin reprofiling and adding new corners immediately after the race, funded by Tom Walkinshaw.

Qualifying

Mansell took pole by more than half a second from Senna, roared on by his home crowd. The Life team had no pit garage and prepared their car on the grass beside the pitlane.

Between-race developments

Subaru ended their involvement with the Coloni team after eight consecutive failures to pre-qualify. Coloni will source new engines for the next race in Germany.
