At Paul Ricard, Mansell took his third win of the season. Prost finished second, Piquet third. Senna had led from pole but crashed early after sliding on oil laid by Andrea de Cesaris’s failed Minardi engine at Signes.

Milestones

Jacques Laffite makes his 176th Formula One start at Brands Hatch, equalling Graham Hill’s record for the most starts by a French driver.

Circuit

This is the last British Grand Prix and the last Formula One race to be held at Brands Hatch. In May, Silverstone and the British Racing Drivers’ Club signed a long-term contract with FISA, and the British Grand Prix will be held at Silverstone from 1987 onwards under FISA’s one-country, one-circuit policy.

Frank Williams appears in the Brands Hatch paddock for the first time since his road accident in France four months ago, which left him paralysed.
