At Imola, Alain Prost won after Senna and Mansell both retired early, but he nearly ran dry in the final corners, frantically weaving the car to slosh the last drops of fuel into the pickup before creeping over the line. Piquet finished second. Gerhard Berger took third — his and Benetton’s first Formula One podium.

Track changes

The Monaco circuit has been modified from last year. The chicane after the tunnel now has three turns and has been renamed the Nouvelle Chicane — a considerably slower passage than the old left-right flick, and 16 metres longer. The circuit’s total length increases accordingly.

Milestones

This is the last Monaco Grand Prix to use a 20-car starting grid. From 1987, the available grid size will be 26 cars, in line with every other race on the calendar.
