Championship standings

Hunt has only 47 points to Lauda’s 64 with three races remaining. Hunt’s disqualification from the British Grand Prix — announced after the Italian race — has cost him nine points and handed three more to Lauda, swinging the gap from near-parity to 17 points.

Previous race

Lauda returned to racing at Monza, six weeks after his crash, and finished fourth. Peterson won for March — his first victory in two years — ahead of Regazzoni and Laffite. Hunt, starting from near the back after the qualifying dispute, spun out trying to charge through the field.

Between-race developments

The Ferrari appeal against Hunt’s inclusion in the British Grand Prix restart was upheld in Paris on 25 September. Hunt is disqualified from the British GP, demoting him to the back of those classified; Lauda is awarded the win.

The Canadian Grand Prix returns to the calendar after being cancelled in 1975 due to a sponsorship dispute between rival breweries.
