Before the season
Driver changes
Juan Manuel Fangio, the defending champion, returns to Maserati after a season at Ferrari and a year and a half at Mercedes before that. He drove for Maserati in 1953 and rejoins the team to attempt a fifth world title with their much-modified 250F.
Scuderia Ferrari bring back Mike Hawthorn, who raced for them in 1955 before moving to BRM in 1956. He joins an already strong Ferrari lineup alongside Peter Collins, Luigi Musso, and Eugenio Castellotti.
Gordini have withdrawn from Formula One entirely. Most of their drivers, including Robert Manzon — who had been with the team for multiple years — leave the sport along with the constructor.
Team changes
Gordini’s withdrawal reduces the number of works constructors in the championship. British Racing Motors (BRM) plan to enter three races in 1957, a limited programme ahead of their first full season in 1958.
Calendar
Eight championship rounds are scheduled between 13 January and 8 September. Three races that appeared on the provisional calendar have been cancelled — the Belgian Grand Prix (2 June), the Dutch Grand Prix (16 June), and the Spanish Grand Prix (20 October) — due to financial disputes driven by the high fuel prices of the Suez Crisis. The Dutch Grand Prix was also cancelled in 1956.
In their place, the Pescara Grand Prix has been added to the calendar as a replacement round. The 25.6 km (15.9 mi) public road circuit near Pescara, Italy, is the longest circuit ever used for a Formula One World Championship race.
The French Grand Prix moves from Reims-Gueux to Rouen-Les-Essarts for the year. The British Grand Prix moves from Silverstone to the Aintree circuit near Liverpool, in line with the event-sharing arrangement between the two venues.
