Fangio has left Ferrari for Maserati, joined by Jean Behra as his principal teammate. The British teams are not present at this opening round; Stirling Moss, who has signed for Vanwall for the season, is part of the Maserati lineup in their absence.

Ferrari arrive with one of their strongest driver rosters in years: Mike Hawthorn, returning to the team after a season at BRM in 1956, joins Peter Collins, Luigi Musso, and Eugenio Castellotti. Maserati have also prepared much-modified 250Fs for the season, and this Argentine round gives them a full works entry before the British constructors arrive.
