1950 Season

The inaugural championship

The 1950 season inaugurates the FIA World Championship of Drivers — the first official Formula One world title. Seven races are scheduled between 13 May and 3 September, all but one in Europe. The exception is the Indianapolis 500, which counts towards the championship but is run under AAA National Championship regulations rather than Formula One rules; no F1 regulars are expected to compete there, nor Indianapolis specialists in the European rounds.

Teams and cars

Four works teams have entered: Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati, and Talbot-Lago, alongside 26 privateer teams. Alfa Romeo arrive as the clear favourites, fielding their Tipo 158 — a supercharged design that first raced in 1938 — with a four-driver lineup of Giuseppe Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio, Luigi Fagioli, and British driver Reg Parnell. Scuderia Ferrari enter with Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi. The French Talbot-Lago team provides the most substantial privateer opposition, while independent Maserati entries round out the field. Ferrari will not compete at the opening round in Britain; they make their championship debut at Monaco.

Calendar

The seven rounds open at Silverstone on 13 May and close at Monza on 3 September. The schedule is: Britain, Monaco, Indianapolis 500, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Italy. Four non-championship Formula One races have already been held across Europe ahead of the season opener: Juan Manuel Fangio won at Pau and San Remo, Reg Parnell won the Richmond Trophy at Douglas, and Georges Grignard won in Paris.

Scoring rules

Points are awarded to the top five classified finishers, with an additional point for setting the fastest lap regardless of final position. First place earns eight points. Only each driver’s four best results from the seven rounds count towards the title — a driver who retires three times can still be champion if their four scoring finishes are strong enough. Shared drives earn half points each for the drivers involved if they finish in a points position.
