Championship standings

Johnnie Parsons, Farina, and Fangio are temporarily tied for the championship lead after three rounds. Parsons earned nine points at Indianapolis — eight for the win, one for the fastest lap — to match the totals of the two Alfa Romeo drivers, who each won one of the two European rounds.

Previous race

The Indianapolis 500 was won by Johnnie Parsons in a Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser, ahead of Bill Holland and Mauri Rose. The race was stopped after 138 of the scheduled 200 laps due to rain. No European Formula One competitors took part.

Between-race developments

José Froilán González is absent, still recovering from burns he sustained when his car caught fire after the first-lap accident at Monaco. His place in the Maserati entry is taken by Nello Pagani. Franco Rol, also injured in the Monaco pile-up, is likewise out.

Entrants

The battle at Bremgarten is expected to be between the three Alfa Romeo 158s of Farina, Fangio, and Fagioli and the Scuderia Ferrari entries of Villoresi — who has the latest Ferrari specification with de Dion rear suspension, twin overhead camshaft engine, and a four-speed gearbox — and Ascari. Reg Parnell, Peter Whitehead, and Rudi Fischer failed to qualify for this round.

This is the last race for pre-war driver Eugène Martin, and the only World Championship Grand Prix for Nello Pagani, better known for his achievements in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
