Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship with 393 points, 62 points ahead of Lando Norris in second, and 86 ahead of Charles Leclerc in third. McLaren, holding 593 points, enters this round as the leader of the Constructors’ Championship from Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, who are second and third with 557 and 544 points, respectively.

At the São Paulo Grand Prix, Verstappen won from 17th on the grid in wet conditions, extending his championship lead to 62 points. Alpine achieved a surprise double podium with Ocon second and Gasly third, their first since 2013. Norris could only manage sixth despite Piastri ceding position to him.

Championship permutations

Max Verstappen has the opportunity to secure his fourth consecutive World Drivers’ Championship title at this event. With two races remaining after Las Vegas — and the Qatar Grand Prix featuring the sprint format with 60 points still available — Norris must outscore Verstappen by at least three points in Las Vegas to retain a mathematical chance of winning the title. Verstappen will be World Champion if he wins the race or finishes ahead of Norris, or if Norris finishes ninth without the fastest lap or lower. Other scenarios exist where Verstappen can clinch depending on relative finishing positions and fastest lap points.

The first free practice session is topped by Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes ahead of his teammate George Russell and Lando Norris of McLaren. The second free practice session is topped by Hamilton ahead of Norris and Russell. The third practice session is topped by Russell ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren and Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari.
