Championship standings

Sebastian Vettel leads Lewis Hamilton by one point in the Drivers’ Championship. Ferrari lead Mercedes by ten points in the Constructors’.

Verstappen won in Austria as both Mercedes retired with technical problems; Ricciardo also retired. Räikkönen finished second, Vettel third. Vettel retook the championship lead by one point.

Track notes

Silverstone features three DRS zones this weekend — the two established zones on the Wellington and Hangar Straights return, joined by a new zone on the pit straight. Uniquely, the DRS on the pit straight can be kept active through the flat-out Abbey and Farm corners, since the system only deactivates when the driver brakes. This has drawn criticism from drivers who consider using DRS through Abbey unsafe. The best approach is to manually deactivate DRS before the corner and reactivate on exit.

Practice

In FP1, Grosjean crashed at Abbey after leaving his DRS open through the corner, and Verstappen stopped on the pit straight with a gearbox issue. In FP2, Verstappen crashed at Luffield and Gasly’s Toro Rosso broke down on track. In FP3, Hartley suffered a heavy crash after his front-left suspension failed at high speed.
