Championship standings

Rosberg leads the Drivers’ Championship with 190 points, ahead of Hamilton on 176 and Ricciardo on 106. Alonso is fourth with 97 points. Bottas has climbed to fifth with 91. Mercedes lead the Constructors’ with 366 points, Red Bull second on 188, Williams third on 121.

Previous race

Rosberg won in Germany from pole, leading every lap of the race at Hockenheim to become the first German driver to win the German Grand Prix in a German car in 75 years. Bottas took second for his third consecutive podium. Hamilton recovered from a qualifying crash — which left him 20th on the grid after a brake disc failure in Q1 — to finish third. The FRIC suspension ban required every team to modify their cars during the weekend.

Car upgrades

Marussia have replaced one of their MR03 chassis for Chilton following balance and electrical issues at the Austrian Grand Prix. Williams have fitted a small additional wing section to increase downforce. Lotus bring new front wing endplates designed to scavenge airflow more efficiently.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the white-banded medium compound as the prime and the yellow-banded soft as the option, plus intermediate and full wet compounds.

Practice

Hamilton led all three practice sessions. He was fastest in FP1 ahead of Rosberg and Räikkönen. He was again quickest in FP2 despite struggling with tyre grip throughout. Hamilton completed the sweep in Saturday morning’s session, leading Rosberg, Ricciardo and Vettel. Chilton’s Marussia developed an oil leak that caused a fire during the first session, restricting him to just five timed laps.
