Championship standings

Sebastian Vettel extended his championship lead to 34 points over Fernando Alonso in Germany, with Räikkönen seven points behind Alonso in third.

Previous race

Sebastian Vettel won the German Grand Prix at his home circuit of the Nürburgring, driving from second on the grid past Lewis Hamilton, who had started from pole. Räikkönen was second, Grosjean third. It was Vettel’s first and only home victory.

Between-race developments

Pirelli has received permission to introduce an entirely new tyre specification for Hungary: a compound combining elements from the 2012 and 2013 tyre, designed as a permanent fix to the puncture failures seen at Silverstone. This replaces the Kevlar belt stop-gap introduced at the German Grand Prix.

The FIA International Tribunal has concluded that Mercedes broke the regulations by running their 2013 car during a private tyre test with Pirelli at the Circuit de Catalunya. As a result, Mercedes has been excluded from the mid-season test at Silverstone taking place between Germany and Hungary.
