Championship standings

Prost leads the championship with 33 points after four races, all of which McLaren has won. The gap between the two teammates remains the only meaningful championship story on the grid.

Between-race developments

Canada returns to the calendar after a one-year absence. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been substantially reconfigured since 1986: the start-finish line, pit lane, and facilities have been relocated from the top end of the track to the bottom end, requiring the removal of two corners and the re-profiling of several others.

During the race weekend, Frank Williams announced that Renault will supply V10 engines to Williams from the 1989 season onward — marking the French manufacturer’s return to Formula One.
