Championship standings

Andretti leads the championship by a growing margin. Lauda retired in France and remains well off the pace. Peterson holds second in the standings.

Previous race

Andretti won France — his third win in four races since Belgium — with Peterson again second for another Lotus 1–2. Watson had taken pole for Brabham but was passed by Andretti on lap one and fell back; Hunt completed the podium. Lauda suffered yet another engine failure, his fourth of the season.

Entrants

Keke Rosberg replaces Eddie Cheever at Theodore. Cheever, whose F1 debut with the team was brief, has returned to Formula Two.

Track changes

The British Grand Prix moves to Brands Hatch, which last hosted the race in 1976. Silverstone will return in 1979. With 31 entries — the largest of the season so far — the Martini of René Arnoux has been excluded from qualifying to reduce the grid to 30 cars.
