The status of Ronnie Peterson heading into the season opener is uncertain: the Swede is reportedly unhappy at Lotus, and it remains unclear until practice begins whether he will race for them or for Shadow.

Frank Williams Racing Cars makes its Formula One world championship debut as a registered constructor, entering two cars under their own name for the first time after losing sponsorship. Brazilian constructor Fittipaldi, with Wilson Fittipaldi driving his own chassis, also makes its championship debut, as does Argentine constructor Berta. The Parnelli team of Mario Andretti runs on Firestone tyres — the last team in the championship still on Firestone rubber.
