At Kyalami, Reutemann led from lap ten and held on to take his first career victory — the first win for an Argentine driver since Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1957 German Grand Prix. Beltoise fought his way through to second, the last podium for BRM. Lauda and Regazzoni both retired late with engine failures.

Between-race developments

James Hunt’s Hesketh won the non-championship International Trophy three weeks before this race, making it five different winners in five races across World Championship and non-championship events — described as one of the most open seasons ever seen.

Circuit

The Spanish Grand Prix moves from Montjuïc to the Circuito Permanente del Jarama near Madrid, continuing an event-sharing arrangement between the two circuits.

Entrants

The Trojan and Amon teams make their Formula One World Championship debuts this weekend. Rikky von Opel also makes his championship debut. Jorge de Bagration, a local driver of Georgian royal descent who had been entered in a Surtees with sponsorship from El Corte Inglés, is absent: the outgoing president of the Spanish Motor Sport Federation cleared his office and took all official files with him, including the entry list; a replacement list was drawn up that omitted de Bagration, whose sponsorship had also just fallen through.

Qualifying

Niki Lauda takes pole from Ronnie Peterson. Qualifying was disrupted by a heavy accident involving Patrick Depailler.
