Championship standings

Stewart leads the championship by a commanding margin after six wins from seven races. Ickx won Germany to move into second in the standings, but the gap to the Scot remains large.

Previous race

Ickx won the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. He made a poor start and dropped to ninth, then worked through the entire field over three laps to join Stewart at the front. The pair battled nose-to-tail for two full laps before Ickx passed under braking at the Südkehre; Stewart’s gearbox then began to slow him and Ickx pulled clear to win by a minute. McLaren and Hill completed the podium. Only four Formula One cars finished the race.
