Championship standings

Brabham leads the championship with 12 points after his win in France — two ahead of Bandini, three ahead of Surtees, Stewart, and Rindt.

Previous race

At Reims, Brabham won from Parkes — who finished second on his Ferrari F1 debut — and Hulme. Bandini had led before his throttle cable broke; he retrieved a piece of string from a trackside straw bale and tied it to the throttle, operating it by hand, but finished outside the points. Clark was absent, having been struck in the eye by a bird during practice. Brabham became the first driver in history to win a World Championship Grand Prix in a car bearing his own name.

The 1950 World Champion Nino Farina died in a road accident while travelling to watch the race.

Entrants

Ferrari has not entered this round to honour a metalworkers’ strike in Italy. British constructor Shannon makes its Formula One championship debut, and this is the first championship start for British drivers Chris Irwin and Chris Lawrence.
