Championship standings

Clark leads the championship following his New Year’s Day victory in South Africa — the two rounds are separated by nearly five months.

Clark dominated from pole at East London, winning by half a minute after teammate Mike Spence spun on oil dropped by Brabham. Surtees was second, Hill third. Jack Brabham had been fighting for second but his car failed with ignition trouble four laps from the end. Jackie Stewart, making his championship debut, finished sixth.

Entrants

Monaco uses a different entry format: one guaranteed grid place per factory team, with all remaining applicants required to qualify on time. In disagreement with this arrangement, Lotus withdraws from the Grand Prix entirely — Clark, Gurney, and Spence are entered instead at the Indianapolis 500, held on 31 May, the day after this race.

Honda, who debuted at the South African Grand Prix, switches from Dunlop to Goodyear tyres for this round. Denny Hulme makes his Formula One World Championship debut for Brabham.
