At Watkins Glen, Clark’s battery was found dead on the dummy grid as the field moved to their starting positions. By the time the Lotus crew replaced it, the last-placed Stebro had already completed its second lap. Clark rejoined over a lap down. Hill led from pole, surrendered the front to Surtees, then battled to retake it before losing ground with handling problems after his anti-roll bar came loose. Surtees led until his engine lost power with 28 laps remaining, handing the win to Hill.
