Championship standings

Ascari and Taruffi are tied at the top of the championship on 9 points each after Belgium. Indianapolis 500 winner Troy Ruttman is third on 8, with Farina fourth on 6 — three points adrift of the joint leaders.

Previous race

At Spa-Francorchamps, Ascari dominated from pole to win with the fastest lap. Jean Behra led the opening lap for Gordini before both Ferraris swept past on lap two; he later retired following a collision with Taruffi. Manzon finished third for Gordini. Paul Frère and Mike Hawthorn, both making their World Championship debuts at the previous race, finished fifth and fourth respectively.

Entrants

Unusually, the race is run over a duration of three hours rather than a fixed distance. Maurice Trintignant joins the Gordini works entry, replacing Johnny Claes from the Belgian round. Ferrari retain Ascari, Farina and Taruffi. The Maserati A6GCM makes its World Championship debut, driven by Philippe Étancelin of Escuderia Bandeirantes, though the car proved a disappointment in practice. Enrico Platé enters a pair of older Maserati 4CLT/48s for Toulo de Graffenried and Harry Schell. Peter Whitehead enters a privately run Alta. Mike Hawthorn again competes in a Cooper-Bristol.

Qualifying

Ascari took his second consecutive pole position with Farina and Taruffi again alongside on the front row, locking out the top three as they did at Spa. Behra and Manzon qualified fourth and fifth, giving Gordini the entire second row. Trintignant and Bira shared the third row with Collins in the fastest HWM. Étancelin’s new Maserati A6GCM qualified on the seventh row of eight.
